Today, during the short daylight hours, Klaus and I walked up to the top of the hill behind Tønsåsen for a bit of fresh air. On our way back down we found a nice pine tree, cut it down and brought it to the house. What is it that makes the smell of pine indoors on December 23rd so special? For me, it evokes the same bliss-like feeling of anticipation as spiced cookies just out of the oven, one clove left in an orange, "three king" insence, mulled toddy and tangerines. I once heard someone on the radio say that Christmas celebration for grownups is all about bringing to life memories of your childhood Christmases (providing they're good memories). Those memories don't seem to be wrapped in colourful prezzie paper, old hymns, Disney specials or massive amounts of fresh snow. Just collect a few simple (but special) scents and - Christmas magic!
