Today is the Sami people's national day, no matter whether they live in Norway, Sweden, Finland or Russia. Although the Sami have been around in this region for a whole lot longer than ethnic Norwegians, Sami day has only been on the offical calendar for a mere 16 years. The flag isn't old either. Symbolising the sun and the moon, the noaide drum, the Sami costume palette and four countries, it was created in 1986. The picture shows the view from our offices towards the campus today, with the Sami (right) and Troms county flag hoisted side by side and lit up by a low but wonderfully persistent sun.
